How to stop programs that start up automatically on Windows XP

It often annoys anyone whenver the computer starts with the programs that pops right away .
Before going to work we have to eventually close all these pop ups which annoys us.This continues to go on increasing by installing new software .Everytime when computer starts this problem arises.cant we control this , yes we can.....
*Go to run
*type msconfig and hit enter.

*Then a window opens exactly as this

*then Select option start up
* By unchecking the options on the application on which you dont want on start up

* click ok(Make sure you arent unchecking the system utilities )
*Restart
